PLEASE READ~ TOO MANY FRIENDS ARE DOING THIS: "One of my biggest pet peeves is this: people making images their profile picture or posting it in an album, but cropping out the copyright notice. Here’s why: ******A big part of good photography is good composition. I’ve chosen to crop my photos the way I cropped them for a reason. If you’re cropping my photo differently, you’re changing my image from how I intended it to be. I’ve done you the favour of providing the images on facebook for you to use. Leaving my name on the photo is the least you can do in return. ******If you take away my name from the photo, no one will know who took it. A photographer’s name is a photographer’s brand. You don’t go ripping the brand name tags off every piece of clothing you own, do you? If someone sees the photo and loves it – I want them to know where it came from. I take pride in my images and I want to build my reputation. ******I’ve worked hard and spent money to produce that image. Photography is a huge investment. I’ve had to purchase and maintain my (very expensive) equipment. I very likely have had to invest in travel expenses to take the photos, also. Not to mention the huge investment of time and energy – both in the years it’s taken to develop the skills I have, but also just the raw time it took to take, process and publish that one particular image. ******Perhaps most importantly – it is ILLEGAL to distribute/publish a photo without having permission to do so and giving credit to the photographer who took it. I typically automatically grant permission to share when I post photos on facebook, but I rarely, if ever get credit for the image. Yes, I know “everyone does it” – but it doesn’t make it right. Chances are I’m not going to sue you either – so you probably won’t get “caught”. But that still doesn’t make it right. Most people understand plagiarism really well when it comes to stealing the written word. Most people understand piracy really well when it comes to downloading music.
