PLIGHT OF A POACHER. As we all are horrified by the total onslaught on the rhino, emotionally drained and infuriated, have we ever sat back to consider the plight of a poacher.(these not being the poachers bosses, but the foot soldiers) Many people living in the “lap of luxury” as opposed to the millions around them who live in abject poverty, may allow one to express views that are accepted by like-minded people who have the luxury of the entitlement of emotion. However the poachers who are also victims in their own state, do not have the similar privilege of emotion. Theirs is a survival of the fittest that poaching has opened the corridor to enrichment and a better life. Reversing this trend will never be achieved by whips and straps, but by trade, education and empathy where the symbiotic upliftment of the impoverished can be achieved together with the growth of the rhino. The true victims who put their lives on the line, besides the rhino are the rangers and poachers who are opposed against each other daily, one to protect and the other to survive.
