PRESCREEN this week: Come an our early at 8pm, Wednesday to catch some more amazing horror shorts! Our film this week, THE MANSION OF MADNESS, is an adaptation of Poes lesser-known story, The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether. So why not pair it with some of the best Poe-inspired shorts? We have: • THE RAVEN (Kurt Steinwendner, 1951). Austria. Steinwedners stark and surreal adaptation of Poes most famous poem is a powerful ode to pre-WW2 Expressionist and Avant-Garde cinema, paired with an incredible electronic soundtrack (so far ahead of its time!). This is, in my opinion, the ONLY film that does Poes poem justice... outside of the Simpsons. Youll probably never get the chance to see this amazing rarity again, so catch it now or.... NEVERMORE! • THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM (Alexandre Austruc, 1964). France. Austruc was one of the major intellectual forces behind the French New Wave, but his incredible filmwork is woefully under exposed here. His short adaptation of The Pit follows the story completely and literally, and for Poes most disorientating piece of psychological terror, that is no small feat! The photography is mind-blowing, and it stars New Wave hero Maurice Ronet! Im just gonna say it: Masterpiece. • THE TELL-TALE HEART (Ted Parmelee, 1953). US. A short, stylish, sharp Expressionist animation of Poes classic tale of crime and punishment! Narrated by James Mason.
