PRESS RELEASE 30/14 For Immediate Release February 18, 2014 SAFETY REMAINS A PRIORITY The Government of Saint Lucia remains mindful of the conditions which surfaced at the Choiseul Secondary School in 2010, rendering one of the buildings structurally affected. As was previously announced, the Choiseul Community Centre was refurbished to house some classes of the School, while the Government seeks financing options for the construction of a new wing. Since the tremor felt in many parts of the island on Tuesday, February 18, 2014, fresh concerns have been raised about the safety of the building. On Tuesday, a team was dispatched from the Ministry of Infrastructure, to conduct an assessment of the structure. No further visible physical damage was reported. The Ministry of Infrastructure after consultation with the Ministry of Education has engaged the services of a structural engineer, who began further assessment on Tuesday. Subsequently, a determination will be made as to whether alternative immediate actions are necessary. The Government of Saint Lucia wishes to remind the public that funds are currently being sought from the World Bank, for the construction of a new building. Consistent with World Bank Procurement procedures, the Government has invited consultants to tender for the design of the new premises. To date, the advertisement has been placed in local newspapers, the website of the Ministry of Infrastructure and that of the World Bank. We remain very mindful of the conditions and reassure all that we remain committed to providing a long-term solution. Meanwhile the Ministry of Infrastructure is pleased to report that works on the Micoud School extension is substantially complete and an opening ceremony will be held in the near future. End.
