PRESS RELEASE Caribbean to Demand Europe Redress for Slavery and Genocide Georgetown, Aug 1 (Prensa Latina) The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is getting ready for what will likely be a long legal battle against the governments of the United Kingdom, France and the Netherlands. This week, CARICOM decided to promote a campaign to claim financial compensation for slavery and genocide perpetrated against the native peoples by those European states. CARICOM reported that it has engaged the services of the prestigious British law firm Leigh Day, specializing in human rights. It is also creating a Compensation Commission to lobby, said the Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves, who is leading the initiative. The legacy of the genocide against the natives and slavery imposed on Africans is the main reason of endemic poverty and lack of development that characterize most of the region, Gonsalves said. Therefore, any agreement must include a formal apology, and as that is not enough, we must also obtain adequate compensation, he added without citing any figure. CARICOM comprises Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Granada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Lucia, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago. plenglish/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1726741&Itemid=1 sgl/ef/isa/mgt/rr Modificado el ( jueves, 01 de agosto de 2013 )
