PRESS RELEASE Special night checking drive held against drunken driving and other major traffic violations on 23.08.2014 (Saturday) from 1900 hours to 0100 hours midnight. • 83 enforcement teams constituted. • 825 violators challaned. • 247 drunk drivers prosecuted. • 259 dangerous driving violators prosecuted. • 244 vehicles impounded. • 44 owners prosecuted. Delhi Traffic Police carried out a special drive against drunken driving and other major traffic violations on 23.8.2014 from 7.00 p.m. to 01.00 am midnight. The drive was held with 83 teams of traffic police officers, deployed at vulnerable points with sufficient numbers of Alcometers for taking intensive prosecution action against drunk drivers and other major traffic violations such as dangerous driving, red light jumping, permit violations, ‘No Entry’ violations, commercial vehicles not fitted with rear or lateral under run protection devices as stipulated under rule 124 CMVR, 1989. During the drive, total 247 drunk drivers were prosecuted and as many as 44 vehicle owners were prosecuted for allowing their vehicles to be driven by drunk drivers. A total of 180 vehicles were impounded for drunken driving of which 11 were LGVs, 126 were cars, 103 were two wheelers, 04 were TSRs, 06 were delivery vans and 07 were other vehicles. It was ensured that all violators are being provided with fresh blow pipe while conducting breath test. Additionally, 259 violators were prosecuted for dangerous driving, 73 for red light jumping, 47 for permit violations, 50 for ‘No entry’ violations and 28 for commercial vehicles not fitted with rear or lateral under run protection devices. The break-up of the prosecution is :- 57 Scooters/Motorcycles, 48 cars, 04 TSRs, 411 HTVs/LGVs/MGVs and 28 other vehicles out of which 44 HTVs/LGVs/MGVs and 20 other vehicles were impounded. Senior traffic police officers including Addl. CsP/Traffic, DCsP/Traffic-Ranges, ACsP/Traffic-Districts and TI Circles were available during the drive for exercising effective supervision and ensuring strict prosecution activity. During the year 2014 (upto 15th August) a total of 20,400 violators have been prosecuted for drunken driving out of which 6,776 violators were arrested and 10,929 vehicles were impounded. From amongst these the courts imposed fines on 14,013 violators and the driving licenses of 400 violators were suspended. 4,621 violators were sentenced to imprisonment wherein 4,534 violators were detained till the rising of court, 70 violators were awarded imprisonment ranging from 1 to 3 days, 11 violators from 4 to 5 days, 01 violator from 6 to 9 days and 05 violators above 10 days. The break-up of the prosecution is :- 11,983 Scooters/Motorcycles, 6,037 cars, 772 TSRs, 741 HTVs/LGVs/MGVs, 382 delivery vans, 24 chartered buses, 06 school buses, 06 RTVs, 15 call centre vehicles, 355 taxis, 57 gramin sewas, 02 cluster buses and 20 other vehicles. Violators involved in drunken driving and permit violations are directed to report for counselling session at Traffic Police Headquarters located at Dev Prakash Shastri Marg, Pusa, New Delhi where they attend educational lectures and are shown short films on harmful effects of drunken driving. A written pledge is also taken from the errant driver not to indulge in drunken driving in future. Educational literatures for safe driving are also distributed during the session.
