PRESS RELEASE: WILLIAMSON CAMPAIGN SUPPORTERS RECEIVE HARASSING PHONE CALLS It is a desperate move LOS ANGELES, CA- Marianne Williamson’s campaign supporters have been receiving harassing phone calls. Someone is playing dirty tricks to undermine Williamson’s run for Congress in California’s District 33. Voting is June 3. The harassing phone calls appear to be from the office of the United Domestic Workers of America, AFSCME Local 3930 (UDW), an organization which represents the hard working caregivers who provide home care in our communities, as the UDWs phone number is displayed on the recipients Caller ID display. However, UDW is not initiating the calls and apparently has been the victim of “Caller ID spoofing.” Caller ID spoofing is the practice of transmitting inaccurate caller ID information with the intent to defraud or cause harm. Caller ID spoofing is a federal crime. The calls have been directed at known supporters of Marianne Williamson. Voters have received multiple calls, as frequently as 5 times per day over the course of the past 2 weeks. The caller asks if the voter is supporting Marianne Williamson, without providing any information about her whatsoever, and then abruptly hangs up. Voters who indicate support for Marianne are called repeatedly. Here is one example of a call a Williamson supporter shared: “My household has received daily calls from San Diego from a group called UDWA at 619-263-7254. After several weeks of twice daily (or more) calls, I called this number and left a voice mail instructing these people not to call my home any longer. This was on May 20. On May 21, I got two more calls, one at 8:30pm. On May 22, I received another call, which I finally answered and told the caller to stop calling me. I also reported this number to the Do Not Call complaint website.” “This kind of harassment is an effort to undermine the Williamson campaign as we head into the final days before the June 3 election,” Ileana Wachtel, the Williamson campaign press secretary said. “We are actively working with UDW and various phone carriers to determine who is behind these harassing calls and encouraging whoever is behind them to immediately stop these dirty tricks. It is a shame that our democratic political process is littered with garbage like this,” she added. UDW, which has not endorsed a candidate in California’s District 33, has also requested that the calls stop immediately. On behalf of the members of UDW, we request that these calls stop immediately, said Doug Moore, Executive Director of UDW.
