PRESS STATEMENT ON THE ELECTION OF MR. ELIJAH CHOLA BANDA STATE COUNSEL AS PRESIDENT OF THE PAN AFRICAN LAWYERS UNION (PALU) The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) wishes to inform the Nation that Mr. Elijah Chola Banda State Counsel was elected as new President of the Pan African Lawyers Union (PALU) at the PALU triennial General Assembly and Conference held at Yaounde in Cameroon on 5th to 7th June 2014. PALU is a Continental Body of Lawyers which seeks to bring under one umbrella all Lawyers and Lawyers’ Associations, of which LAZ is part, including those established on a regional basis, for the purpose of complementing at the level of civil society the work of the African Union, and to that end, undertake various programmes and activities related to the following: · promotion of the operation and observance of the rule of law; · promotion and protection of fundamental human rights; · working with other stakeholders on the continent and beyond for purposes of promoting the rounded development of Africa; · ensuring the independence of judges and the judiciary and of all lawyers and the legal profession generally; · promoting good governance and democracy in Africa; and, · working for the total physical, economic and social development of the African continent as a whole. On the occasion of handing over the Presidency to Mr. Banda SC, the outgoing President of PALU, Mr Akere Tandeng Muna from Cameroon expressed his unwavering support for Mr. Banda. He stated that he was confident that under Mr. Banda, whom Mr. Muna had worked with for some three years as his Vice President, PALU had been left in capable and energetic hands. He wished Mr. Banda SC and the whole of his new Executive and Council well as they take on the tasks ahead of them. On behalf of the Council of LAZ, the fraternity of all Practicing Lawyers in the Country, I extend our hearty congratulations to Mr. Banda on the occasion of his election to this important Office. Considering the academic and professional credentials and the practice experience that Mr. Banda SC possesses, it is not an overstatement to say that he is truly deserving of this honour which is in recognition for his valuable contribution to PALU. LAZ has received this news with a great sense of excitement. I have no doubt in my mind that many at the bar and elsewhere where qualified Lawyers ply their Profession will be greatly inspired by this well deserved personal achievement. I remain hopeful that as Mr. Banda SC adds this honour to the milestones of his enviable achievements, he will still remain available to members of our distinguished bar to offer counsel in the various areas that he has been done when called upon in the past. Having regard to the important stature of PALU as an Institution of governance and persuasion on the African Continent, I find myself duty bound to call upon all Lawyers and Judicial Officers, and indeed all other stakeholders in the governance of our Nation, including senior government officials, other professional bodies, opposition political parties, civil society organizations, churches and such like institutions, to join LAZ as it toasts this exciting milestone and to give all due encouragement and render support to Mr. Banda SC for the next three years that he will be at the helm of PALU. ________________________________ George Chisanga – President LAW ASSOCIATION OF ZAMBIA 9 June 2014
