DXNSALIM ‘Percentage Of Diabetes Among Children In Kuwait Is Very High’ ‘30 Per 100,000 Every Year’ KUWAIT CITY, Dec 13: Pediatric Consultant at Sabah Hospital Dr Nada Al- Turkeit revealed the percentage of diabetes among children in Kuwait is very high, mentioning that according to the latest statistics, there are more than 30 people per 100,000 diagnosed with diabetes every year as per the electronic national record at Dasman Institute for Diabetes Researches, reports Al- Watan daily. Al-Turkeit explained some newborn babies suffer from congenital diabetes and they can be treated by using medicines. She added the procedures in Sabah Hospital include submission of reports to schools where there are students diagnosed with diabetes in order to take care of them in case they collapse. She said these schools must have special devices for measurement of sugar levels because at some point, the patients must be given juice or water with sugar. In worst cases, there is an injection accompanied with specific instructions that should be given if the patient loses consciousness, she concluded. Meanwhile, Genetic Diseases Consultant Dr Sadiqa Al-Awadhi has stressed the need to lay down strict regulations on the marriage of people with mental disabilities, reports Al-Qabas daily. Al-Awadhi said such marriages must be regulated through the issuance of certificates from the Ministry of Health. She pointed out that before approval of the financial benefits for couples intending to marry, a person with mental disability is not allowed to get married unless the ministry issues a certificate. This is in addition to a medical team consisting of three psychiatrists and two experts from the Genetic Diseases Center tasked to look into the condition of those who want to get married after undergoing the required tests. She added 12 people with mental disabilities married their housemaids according to the Public Authority for Handicapped Affairs. In other news, Director of Primary Healthcare at the Capital Health District Dr Fatmah Al-Asousi said Adeiliya and Yarmouk health centers have been included as health regions to be part of the model cities registered by the World Health Organizations (WHO), reports Al-Rai daily. Al-Asousi confirmed the health cities are registered on the world health map, explaining there are specific conditions to be met before a health facility is classified as such. She disclosed health cities should have green surroundings and sports facilities. She added the Capital Health District has 25 health centers and 10 others will be included later as part of the family medical care. She said the population of the district is over half a million, saying all health centers there provide comprehensive medical care including clinics for diabetes, pediatric and obesity.
