PROCEDURES IN THE CLASSROOM In Harry Wong’s book on The First - TopicsExpress

PROCEDURES IN THE CLASSROOM In Harry Wong’s book on The First Days of School – he dedicated a whole chapter on Procedures and Routines. I was so amazed by this Music instructor who was teaching about Angklungs to a group of students. His control of the class was simply Outstanding! The students came into the Music room after their recess break. Noise was definitely there when they started to settle down. When he sat in front of the class, the students knew the class was about to start. They quietened down almost immediately. He had 3 students to collect the instruments and to pass it down to their friends from the sides! He was teaching the students how to play chords and individual notes. His hand signs were awesome. Their eyes were focused on his hand and if they did not, he would constantly remind them. Remember Repetition is the key in order for a specific behavior to be learnt. When he showed his fingers with his palm facing the students, they knew it was for individual notes. When he turned his palm towards himself, they knew that it was for chords. Throughout the lesson, the students were very focused and followed every instruction given out. When a student could not follow the procedure when holding the Angklung, it was removed from him immediately. After about 10 minutes, he had his instrument back. He also noticed a couple of very hyper active students who were testing his patience all the time. They knew what they had to do after the last warning that the class was to be punished because of them. He then started his assessment of their playing individually when they played as a group. His time management was good as he knew how much time he had for each segment of his lesson. The procedure to keep the Angklung was also clear but when others started to crowd around their friends, he stepped in immediately. Throughout this time, the noise level was controlled and the time when the instructor actually raised his voice was two within an hour. This instructor had laid out his procedures very clearly to the students as you can see from the lesson above. This was the 4th time he was seeing the students. He only saw them once a week. When the procedures are repeated consistently, it will become a routine. Procedures and Routines are what it takes for a teacher to be effective.
