PS... I have known people who have been solidly in work for 20/30 years. They cant fully understand unemployment, and may have fallen into the trap of thinking people cant be bothered. When out of the blue, they are made redundant, their world falls apart. It is a big shock. They go to the job centre, thinking they are somehow different to those other unemployed people, you know the scroungers... think they will get some sympathy or respect from job centre staff, think they will easily find a new job because of their impeccable work history. It is horrible to say, but do not be under any illusions. Some job centre staff are lovely indeed, (less & less so, it seems) but they also have to comply! You will mostly be treated like the scum of the earth, talked down to, made to comply with unrealistic job search demands, made to go and work for free or be placed on some useless course. You may have been trying for months to get a new job, with all your qualifications and work history, you cannot even get an interview. You go to sign on, cringing at the thought of going in that place. You dress in your smartest clothes to avoid being talked down to again. As you brace yourself to go in, a passer by shouts GET A JOB! Reality...
