Panelist bio - Professor Herbert Weiss Herbert Weiss first came to the Congo in December 1959 to study the independence struggle under the auspices of the Center for International Studies at MIT. He focused on the general evolution of this struggle and especially on three political parties, the ABAKO, the PSA and the MNC/Lumumba. Among many other Congolese leaders, Patrice Lumumba personally helped and supported his research. The result was a book, Political Protest in the Congo, published by Princeton University Press in 1967. It emphasized the radical role of rural masses during this struggle. Subsequently, he focused on the Congo Rebellions (1963-68). Weiss has often returned to the Congo to study its political development with emphasis on parties, democratization, elections and protest. The last time was in April 2014. In 2009 the National University of the Congo (UNIKIN) and several other institutions organized a two day conference on political mobilization in his honor to celebrate his 50 years of his research work on the Congo. Weiss has had a long academic career in the US at NYU and City University of New York. Currently his lives in Washington DC and works as a consultant, writer and lecturer on the Congo.
