Part One of my 1998 book The Mars Mystery is entitled The Murdered Planet. I did NOT consider the possibility of nuclear explosions on Mars but instead focussed the investigation on a giant comet that explosively fragmented close to Mars 20,000 years ago, utterly devastating the red planet, and perhaps obscuring the traces of a former civilisation there. I also proposed that other fragments of that same giant comet bombarded the earth between 13,000 and 12,000 years ago. The Mars Mystery was dismissed by academics at the time as a work of pseudoscience but since then evidence has emerged that the earth was indeed hit by fragments of a giant comet 12,980 years ago -- exactly in the window I indicated. What exactly happened to Mars, and when and why it suffered the catastrophic damage that it did remains to be finally settled. Dr John Brandenburgs ideas -- however left-field they may seem -- should be welcomed as a contribution to the debate and as a stimulus to the further research that so badly needs to be done.
