Part of the TPP CHANGES TO GEOBLOCKING RULES Critics of the treaty warn its adoption could lead to more draconian copyright laws in Australia. But Australian negotiators to the agreement say they are lobbying for other countries to adopt measures that could make it easier for consumers to circumvent online geoblocking restrictions. The geoblocking technology is widely used by technology companies and some websites to show consumers and businesses different pricing or content depending on their country of origin. Major content owners like Netflix also block users outside of the markets it participates in, such as Australia, using similar restrictions. It is understood Australian negotiators proposed a discussion on use and implementation of the restrictions, after a parliamentary inquiry called in July to abolish restrictions. But any proposed measures are unlikely to progress as other Pacific countries do not suffer from the same dearth of content as Australia. A key party of the treaty, the United States, is also likely to protest against the provision on the grounds it is a significant source of online content, and large companies profit from charging geographic markets at different rates.
