Pastor Mikes Daily Devotion Monday February 3, 2014 Matthew 22:37–40, Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” To what degree are we to love the Lord? The Apostle Paul, in 1 Thessalonians 5:23, speaks of the trichotomy of man, or the three parts of mankinds being: spirit, soul, and body. The body of a person is the physical part of us that we look at in the mirror every day; that part of us that we see fading away. We exercise it, comb and brush it, scrub and clean it, trying to preserve it as long as we can. When I have a heart dedicated to God, I will express my love for Him through using my body to serve Him. The soul of a person is your personality, it is how others perceive you. We all have personalities that differ, and God uses the variety of personalities to connect with others of similar personalities. When we speak of soul mates, this would be someone to whom you relate, someone with whom your personality blends well. When you love God with your soul, you see the gifting of who He has created you to be in the light of reaching others for His glory. Our spirit is the part of us that was formerly dead, but He has now made alive. When you have been born again, your spirit is the part of you that communes with God. When your priority is to love God, then you will see your body, soul, and spirit in a different light, as you dedicate them to Him for His use in the lives of others. Look at these verses this way; the greatest commandment is a result of our salvation, the biggest priority in life. The second commandment is discipleship, or a desire to see others grow in the knowledge of Him through a love for the brethren. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets (The entire Old Testament). Deuteronomy 6:6–7, “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.
