Peace in our time (Chamberlain, 1938; Obama, 2nd Inaugural - TopicsExpress

Peace in our time (Chamberlain, 1938; Obama, 2nd Inaugural Address) will always fail in the absence of Justice. I stand condemned, alongside these men, because, I, too, do nothing. ... Indeed, my state is worse, as I am aware of the evil and know I should speak or act, and still I am silent... While they do nothing and are silent because of their hope (at best) or ignorance of human nature (at worst). The world is smaller now than it was in 1944... The judgment I sinfully placed on German citizens who were silent in the face of great evil in their own backyard... That judgment is my own. Indeed, my state is worse as well, as I am not threatened if I speak up, while they would have risked facing great peril had they broken their silence.
