Peace to everyone! Let Jesus lead our lives... May 18, 2014: Fifth Sunday of Easter Gospel: JOHN 14:1-12 1 Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. Q: Ano ang sinabi ni Jesus sa Kanyang mga alagad? 2 In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? Q: Ano ang mayroon sa bahay ng Ama? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be. Q: Ano ang plano ni Jesus? 4 Where I am going you know the way.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. Q: Ano naman ang paliwanag ni Jesus? 7 If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” 8 Philip said to him, “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Q: Ano ang reaction ni Jesus? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who dwells in me is doing his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else, believe because of the works themselves. 12 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father.” Key points/summary: do not let hearts be troubled; have faith in God and in Jesus; the Father and Jesus are one; the Way, the Truth and the Life; no one comes to the Father except through Jesus; do greater works Reading 1: ACTS 6:1-7 1 As the number of disciples continued to grow, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. 2 So the Twelve called together the community of the disciples and said, “It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table. 3 Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task, Q: At ano ang napagkasunduan nila? 4 whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” Q: Ano naman ang gagawin ng Labindalawa? 5 The proposal was acceptable to the whole community, so they chose Stephen, a man filled with faith and the Holy Spirit, also Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicholas of Antioch, a convert to Judaism. 6 They presented these men to the apostles who prayed and laid hands on them. 7 The word of God continued to spread, and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly; even a large group of priests were becoming obedient to the faith. Key points/summary: numbers growing in faith; complaint of Hellenists; assembly led by the Twelve; Word of God (preaching) and serving at table (needs); prayer; laying of hands; seven filled with Spirit and wisdom; anointed to take care of needs; apostles continued to pray and spread the Word; growth of the community Reading 2: 1 PETER 2:4-9 Beloved: 4 Come to him, a living stone, rejected by human beings but chosen and precious in the sight of God, Q: Ayon kay Peter, kanino daw dapat lumapit? 5 and, like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For it says in Scripture: Behold, I am laying a stone in Zion, a cornerstone, chosen and precious, and whoever believes in it shall not be put to shame. Q: Anong pangako ang ayon sa Kasulatan? 7 Therefore, its value is for you who have faith, but for those without faith: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone, Q: At sino ang makikinabang sa pangako? 8 and A stone that will make people stumble, and a rock that will make them fall. They stumble by disobeying the word, as is their destiny. 9 You are “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own, so that you may announce the praises” of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Key points/summary: come to Him; let selves be built into a spiritual house; holy priesthood; faith; shall not be put to shame; chosen race, holy nation, people of His own; announce His praises; wonderful light; stumble by disobeying Connection: In the Gospel, Jesus assures us: “Do not let your hearts be troubled.” Although He was ascending to the Father, Jesus assures His disciples that He is preparing places in the Father’s house. Then He will come back to take them to the Father’s house. For no one comes to the Father except through Jesus, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Those who have faith in Him will be able to do greater things. In the 1st reading, the Twelve were guided by the Holy Spirit in anointing seven assistants who will take on the ministry of serving at table while the Twelve continue on praying and spreading the Word. Because of what they have learned from Jesus, and their decision through the presence of the Spirit, the Word continued to spread and the number of disciples increased greatly. And in the 2nd reading, Peter emphasizes that whoever comes to the cornerstone, Jesus Christ and builds spiritual houses with holy priesthood, shall not be put to shame and will be brought to His wonderful light. The readings tell us that the Lord is always with us, especially when we are troubled. If we come to Him, have faith in Him, we can do greater things and be a part of His spiritual house - with Jesus as the cornerstone. Hibla: Do not let your hearts be troubled. Make Jesus your Way, Truth and Life, and the cornerstone of your lives. You will not be put to shame for He will not abandon you. Allow Jesus to lead our lives. Application: What teaching of Jesus did we follow? Did it bring us abundant grace and blessings? What instance in your life did you feel His presence and that He did not abandon you? Responsorial Psalm: PS 33:1-2, 4-5, 18-19 Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you. Hibla + resp Psalm: When we are troubled, allow Jesus to lead our lives for His mercy will be on us.
