Pen to Paper West Branch Christian Writers to host conference By BETHANY WIEGAND bwiegand@sungazette Armed with a critiquing writer’s quintessential utensils — caffeine and brightly colored pens — the West Branch Christian Writers sit down for their meeting. Each have brought pages from their current literary endeavors hoping to get advice on what to change and what to keep from their fellow writers. “It’s a very encouraging group,” Kathie Mitchell, a member for more than 11 years, said. “We’re not in competition, we are rooting for each other and we celebrate everyone’s victories, even if it’s just a ‘Yay!.’ ” WBCW was formed in 1980, taking on its formal name in 1990. It was formed by the late Eileen Berger, who was a native of Hughesville. The group is comprised of both professional and aspiring writers. The group has been featured each year in the Sun-Gazette’s Christmas Day edition since 1999. Newest member, Michelle Love, has only been attending meetings for two weeks. “I’m a newbie writer. But I’m learning the craft,” Love said. She found the group through a website advertising their upcoming conference, and decided to join. Roberta Brosius has been a member on and off, beginning when she attended her first meeting 25 years ago after knowing Berger, the group’s founding mother. Sue Fairchild also has been a member of the group for around four years, after being introduced by Brosius. “This group absolutely propelled me to write. We kind of all help each other,” Fairchild said. SEE FULL STORY AT sungazette.
