Penn and Teller are both professional skeptics and magicians who don’t mind telling you how their tricks are done. In their documentary Tim’s Vermeer, they chronicle a modern day genius Tim Jenison and his quest to take artist Johannes Vermeer from “unfathomable genius” to “fathomable genius” by asserting that his inexplicably high definition paintings may have been created with secret mechanical technology. The film also seeks to blur the lines between art and science. (Isn’t magic just engineering marauding as art?) Like most artists, Vermeer toiled with only modest success during his lifetime, yet now is regarded as one of the greatest artists of all time. He produced a relatively small number of works, but the detail and composition are so insanely complex that they seem impossible by 1600’s standards. His paintings are actually higher definition than the actual real life subjects and his mastery of color exceeds the physical limits of the human retina. Now, 350 years later, Tim may have solved the mystery and will upend the very definition of art in the process. This film is astounding and profound on many levels. I can’t stop thinking about it. It challenges you to look at so many things differently. It’s a MUST SEE and well worth the drive to Santa Cruz. You will be riveted! Sun rating. #TimsVermeer #PennandTeller #JohannesVermeer
