People have asked me over the past few days if I was afraid to go into the enclosures with the wolves. The answer is no, I was not afraid. I have worked with exotics before and also knew I was in good hands with the staff. That being said, I did not walk in there thinking I was above them or better than them. I was extremely grateful and humbled at their ability to accept my presence and even welcome it. Working with animals, of any species, including large predators, is an incredible privilege. not a right, and the wolves were yet another teacher of this to me. I walked in and out of the enclosures filled with respect, for them as individuals, for them as wild animals, and for their gracious forgiveness of all our human errors. I feel this way with the dogs every day. We are getting there, they are just waiting for us to catch up.
