People usually claim they have forgiven someone without forgetting. The question I ponder on constantly is, have you really forgiven the person if you cant forget what happened? Forgiveness is the intentional and voluntary process by which a victim undergoes a change in feelings and attitude regarding an offence, lets go of negative emotions such as vengefulness, with an increased ability to wish the offender well. Forgetting refers to apparent loss or modification of information already encoded and stored in an individuals long term memory. It is a spontaneous or gradual process in which old memories are unable to be recalled from memory storage. Now the key words in the definition of forgiveness is lets go. Whats the best way of letting go of something if not forgetting about it. People say we forget out of impulse or spontaneity, I think we choose to forget. Why did we forget the meal we had for breakfast last Thursday? we forgot because its not important. If we wanted to remember we would have. We probably would have written it down somewhere to remind us. My point, we can gradually loose(forget) bad memories if we choose to.
