People who report being in love show a dramatic surge in phenylethylamine a signaling molecule analogous to amphetamine, according to two Italian researchers, Marazziti & Canale from the Univ of Pisa. (Chocolate contains phenylethylamine so the connection runs deep.) The researchers took blood samples of 24 lovers & 24 nonlovers. Lovers had dramatically higher cortisol levels (cortisol is the major anxiety and fear hormone that crazes the heart). This combined with a discovery that heart attacks (literally, profound myocardial stunning) can be produced by acute emotional stress rounds out the picture nicely. However, the Italians found after 12-28 mos cortisol levels dropped in their sample of lovers. They state unequivocally, as only Italians can, that love sweet love lasts only 18mos to 3 yrs.
