Petition by Vasantkumar Shetty Bangalore, India Dear Prime Minister, We, the non Hindi speaking Indians congratulate you on becoming the Prime minister of the Indian Union and wish you good luck for your tenure at office. After seeing the recent push for usage of Hindi by various ministries of the Government of India, we are petitioning you to let you know that this move by Government Of India is resulting in grave inconvenience to crores of non-Hindi speaking Indians and hope that you, being a Gujarati, will understand our concerns and act towards getting them addressed. As you know, the Official Language Act accords a higher status to Hindi and English by making them the official languages of the Union. Government of India actively pursues the policy of encouraging the spread of Hindi in all the offices of Government of India resulting in non Hindi languages getting sidelined from the spheres of administration and public service even in non Hindi states. Government of India runs a host of services targeting citizens in areas like Banking, Insurance, Passport, PF, Railways, Airports, Highways, Telecom, etc and a Hindi and English only policy is effectively putting crores of non Hindi speakers to a disadvantage and is creating a sense of alienation among speakers of non Hindi languages. We fear that such a discriminatory language policy will end up dividing Indians speaking different languages than uniting them. Since you are known to being empathetic towards the concerns of the states and its citizens, we hope you will take cognizance of this grave injustice and take action to safeguard & nurture all languages of India on par with Hindi and English. Linguistic equality will foster a greater sense of unity among Indians speaking different languages. Our demands: 1. Amend the official languages act to include all languages present in the 8th schedule of the Constitution and declare them as official languages of the Indian Union. 2. Stop the current efforts by the Government Of India to push for the usage of only Hindi in its interaction with the state governments and citizens of this country. change.org/en-IN/petitions/prime-minister-of-india-declare-all-languages-present-in-8th-schedule-of-the-indian-constitution-as-official-languages-of-the-indian-union?share_id=SsvApNCPla&utm_campaign=share_button_action_box&utm_medium=facebook&utm_source=share_petition
