Philosaturday is technically over (in my time zone) but lets quickly end with credentialism and false neutrality. We hear a lot of Im not a scientist, but... and also Believe this guy, hes a doctor and Dont believe that guy, hes a doctor in a different field. PZ Myers takes on both in these articles. In today’s media, taking a side is seen as a violation of neutrality. One thing they’re doing by announcing that they’re not scientists is declaring that they are an objective outsider…because as everyone knows, having extensive knowledge about a subject biases a person towards a particular best answer. scienceblogs/pharyngula/2014/06/17/im-not-a-scientist-but/ Its also funny that we experience a lot of exasperation from the false neutrality crowd and attempts to appeal to science to bail them out when we call them out on being anti-science. Diploma mills give fake credentials to quacks and we harangue people who dont work specifically on the topic being debated. I think its a similar ideology driving both problems though, one rooted in very old traditions involving trusting authority and people over arguments and data. And you get people saying Global warming is fake because my dentist told me so and That guys just a geochemist, he cant comment on weather systems! freethoughtblogs/pharyngula/2014/06/21/creationists-climate-change-denialists-and-racists-and-the-credentialism-strategy/
