Picture this !! The driver of the RED Car ILLEGALLY decides to cross the road at the point of the picture. If the car has been stationary it may take up to 3 seconds to cross the road. The Biker (ok the biker is going towards the car and not away as in the picture) is ILLEGALLY doing 120km/h = 33.33 m/s. The moment the line of sight is so that the biker and the driver can see each other they are 65 m apart. If the driver freezes in the process of turning there is trouble as there may not be enough space for the biker to pass between the car and the wall. If the driver does not see the biker and turns in front of the biker the biker has exactly 1.9 seconds to avoid a crash. If the biker is traveling at 120km/h (usually faster here, I know) and has the best of reflexes a person can have he/she will have traveled 49.99m in the 1.5 seconds reaction time. Now the biker start applying brakes or looking for alternatives. That leaves the biker with 16m which is equal to about 0.5 seconds of time & distance to avoid a collision. Is it possible to avoid a collision given these parameters? I don`t think so But as I understand some replies to a previous post in the THINK BIKE and this forum the biker HAS THE RIGHT to do this but NOT THE DRIVER of the red car. Thus my understanding from some previous replies is that it will ONLY be the driver of the car that is at fault if the biker gets maimed or killed in this instance.
