Plans to radically transform NRBs urban development came closer to reality following a validation of the draft Masterplan. “This now paves the way for the next, ambitious phase in Nairobi’s urban development given that the current framework is anachronistic having been developed over four decades ago,” said Nairobi Governor Dr Evans Kidero. The Governor noted that Nairobi has grown rapidly in recent years hence the need for a fresh urban development model that is in tandem with the changing times. “The purpose of the plan is to provide an integrated development framework for the county. It seeks to develop a common framework to facilitate development and improved service delivery to stimulate economic activity, high quality of life and enable Nairobi become one of the most attractive cities of the world,” Kidero told the forum. The NIUPLAN is anchored on six key thematic areas namely: • Population, Urban Economy and Socio-cultural issues • Land Use and Human Settlements • Urban Transport (road, railway, airport) • Governance and Institutional Arrangements • Infrastructure • Environment (Strategic Environment Assessment) From here I will personally be at the forefront in steering it through the next phase. My office will prepare a Masterplan Implementation Bill to be presented to the County Assembly for enactment. I will marshal my legal team for the necessary legal input and promise that we will have the Masterplan in place by September 2014! Said Dr. Kidero.
