Coastal Louisiana is a national treasure and one of the most productive estuaries in the world. However, like many areas along our nation’s shores, Louisiana is facing growing threats from climate change, sea level rise, and increasing flood risk. This webinar discusses how Louisiana is addressing this problem through an ecologically-based planning framework described in Louisiana’s Comprehensive Master Plan for a Sustainable Coast and is creating a more sustainable coastal landscape and resilient communities through the implementation of large-scale Coastal Ecological Restoration projects. Presenters will discuss ongoing efforts to develop a comprehensive statewide planning framework to prioritize restoration and protection projects, as well as site-level planning, design, and implementation of restoration projects in a range of ecologies across the Louisiana coast. Objectives: Understand an integrated, systems-based approach to environmental analysis, planning, and design - with emphasis on basin-scale ecosystem restoration. Become familiar with working in linked socio-ecological systems, the need for interdisciplinary planning teams, and the importance of incorporating holistic ecological, economic, social, and cultural goals, objectives, and performance criteria. Understand the complexities of implementing large-scale barrier island and marsh creation projects.
