Please keep up the pressure on our Governor to make sure that our state government follows through with its promise to opt out of Common Core and replace the standards accordingly - to address our states best interests. See below for the letter I just wrote and sent to Governor Pat McCrory (It is also attached under Notes) - Hello Governor McCrory, I am sending this email for two reasons: (1) One, to personally thank you for signing legislation to replace the Common Core standards with ones that are more suitable and accountable to the people of North Carolina; and (2) Two, to ask that you follow through with the wishes of the informed, well-intentioned, and honorable citizens and teachers of the state to make sure that steps are not taken to undermine them. There are rumors going around that the fight to sever the ties to Common Core is not over and that you personally support the top-down, nationally-controlled approach that is the CCSS. I am a teacher and a parent of 4 students who attend the public school system in our state. I have been a vocal opponent against Common Core for over two years now and have done extensive research on the topic. I have been in active conversation with legislators over the past 2 years, even when they would look at me and say: I dont know anything about Common Core. You can imagine how disturbing it is to hear that legislators talk like that when the task of education explicitly falls to the state legislature under the state constitution. The responsibility for education is a sovereign function; not a central function. I can assure you that there is not a single teacher in my school system who supports it. I can assure you that there is not a single parent or student that has anything positive to say (other than that having grade-appropriate standards is a good thing). I know you are engaged in the debate that is Common Core. I know Dan Forest is our biggest ally. I want to remain hopeful that the new Education Standards Committee will objectively review the current standards and not be pursuaded by the lobbyists and other deep pocket interest groups to make only cosmetic changes...... hoping that North Carolinas activists will have gone back to sleep and gotten back on with their hectic lives. As parents, we cant teach our children everything and we dont have the time to scrutinize our school curriculum to make sure that our children are being taught well, properly, accurately, without bias, and without motives from any administration (other than the unfettered opportunity to get a robust education to make each child an informed, engaged, productive citizen and positive contributor to society), and able to go on and live his or her American dream and not bow to the goals of some type of assembly-line, industry-minded, economic pressure. The continued success of our state, and indeed our country, depends on the mindset of wealth creation which is predicated on the successful education of our children and the respect of freedom so that each can live their lives knowing that they can reach their full potential, without undue restraint, undue burden, and without state indoctrination and ulterior motives. Children are unique gifts and our future. They are not guinea pigs and they are not merely numbers and statistics. While some students just fight the education process because they see a life based on sloth and entitlement (a viable option created by government policy, unfortunately), our education process should never surrender its strength and its goals in order to dump so much money and energy into accommodating students with such mentality. The energy should go towards changing government policy regarding work, productivity, fraud, so-called disabilities, and entitlements. It should also go towards a public education path that teaches proper communication skills, vocation training, and knowledge and skills to start and run a business. This is just my two cents, of course. Again, it is offered as a teacher, a parent (a RESPONSIBLE parent), and as a tax-payer. Once again, I want to thank you for heeding the calls of parents, teachers, students, and other citizens who honor and respect the state constitution and expect to live by and be protected by its terms. Thank you for heeding our calls and addressing our concerns over this questionably-motivated, bureaucratic-owned, states rights violative, and centrally owned and controlled system of education. The interests of North Carolina citizens and the best policy for our children is to have an education system that is tailored and accountable to them. Thank you most sincerely for signing the legislation and helping us defend our parental rights, our childrens best interests, and our states sovereignty. Regards, Diane Rufino, attorney and teacher Greenville, NC
