Policing & Community Safety remain top of the agenda for Downs Road Residents Representatives of the Districts Policing & Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) and Downs Road Residents met once again to continue working on difficulties highlighted in and around the area. Down District PCSP Engagement committe chairperson Cllr Willie Clarke, welcomed the engagement, he explained “I am pleased the residents of Downs Road, Newcastle have taken the time to meet with us twice now and provide real and touching examples of how their lives have been negatively impacted on by problems such as anti-social behaviour and illegal drinking. I am also satisfied that as a Committee we have been proactive in our response and in partnership with other agencies moved to affect change immediately on behalf of both residents and those who visit the area. The PCSP as a body has representation from all sectors, including key statutory bodies, community representatives and local Councillors, which allows us to provide a comprehensive and holistic response to policing and community safety issues. In reply to queries from residents about the police response in the area Inspector Marty Trainor outlined the PSNI Nitelife Strategy, which includes work with licencees and interventions through the Neighbourhood Policing Teams. Council Enforcement Officer Eleanor McCartney highlighted the positive impact of new legislation which means all dogs must be on a lead and the additional seasonal workers provided by the Council to help tackle littering, illegal drinking and dog fouling. PCSP Manager Janine Hillen stated, the PCSP Engagement Committee has only been up and running for just over two months and already we are incredibly busy. This shows the need for ongoing consultation with local residents we are pleased that communities have invited us, to hear first hand their concerns. We are subsequently encouraging any other groups or residents in the District who would like to meet with the PCSP to get in touch by telephone on 02844610857 or via email [email protected].
