Polluters again caught by citizen watchdogs. Thanks Sierra and Kentucky Waterways Alliance (KWA). From the article: As Sierra Club notes, the coal ash pond at the Brown plant is unlined, and sits over a fractured geology. Over time, several seeps have developed under and around the coal ash pond. Those seeps have been leaking toxic levels of contaminants out of the pond and into groundwater and adjacent Herrington Lake. These contaminants include arsenic, iron, mercury, nickel, and more. Sierra Club’s report also highlights KU’s proposal to construct a new coal ash landfill on top of the existing coal ash pond, long-term implications of which are unknown.
