Pope Francis created a controversy amongst Evangelicals this week, - TopicsExpress

Pope Francis created a controversy amongst Evangelicals this week, when he stated in his weekly address, that those who believe they can maintain a personal and direct relationship with Jesus Christ were dangerous and harmful. You do *not* have a personal relationship with Jesus! How is that possible?.......you never even met Jesus. The Synoptic gospels only give us 9 and a 1 half days of information about his life and ministry! In John 16:23 Jesus told us to ask him nothing! Why? Our relationship should be with the inner spirit in us; not the outer Jesus who existed 2000 years ago. When a Christian says......I love Jesus I wonder if they even realize that they could only be referring to their own inner spirit not a man who lived 2000 years ago of whom we have no true reliable information outside the Synoptic gospels! 2Cor.13:5 says Jesus Christ is In You! This means that the very same spirit that resided in the person we know of as Jesus also resides in you.......this is why Jesus tells us that we can do the same miracles he did and even greater miracles! Jesus wanted us to become acquainted with the God In Us; not him! This personal relationship crap irks me probably more than any other variety of Christian error. Its like having a personal relationship with Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny or the Tooth Fairy. But what its really like, to someone like me who has known schizophrenics, is schizophrenia. Its like those crackpot schizophrenics who believe they have a personal relationship with a celebrity, and wind up in jail for stalking them (or killing them). Theres no relationship at all. That guy who shot Gabrielle Giffords and a bunch of other people was considered incompetent to stand trial. His schizophrenia rendered him incapable of making sound decisions. Granted, he didnt believe Giffords was his girlfriend, but his personal grievance with her was, well, personal, making him like most other shooters of famous people. This makes me wonder if we Christians who believe we have a personal relationship with someone weve never met are the same ones who accuse atheists of having a personal grudge against God! I dont have a personal relationship with Jesus (neither do you)...........Nor do I have a personal relationship wtih Darwin, or Moses, or Elijah, or George Washington. That would be silly. My relationship is with my Inner Spirit.........not with a person Ive only met through scriptures written by men Who Never Met Him Either! Someone would be considered delusional if he believes he is Jesus Christ, but not if he believes he has a relationship with him. Kind of wacky in my opinion. Not to mention, if a Biblical character did the exact same thing on the basis of what God said in his head, hed be a hero. Actually, some Biblical characters did act on delusions and hallucinations. Thats what happens when you have a personal relationship with a deity -- you get permission and/or instructions to do practically anything. Namaste
