Porter Pockets President’s Prize With wall to wall sunshine in Dunfanaghy this week the course was looking and playing fantastic. Last week was also the lead up to Brian Dolan’s President’s day on Saturday so there were competitions to suit everyone all week. A few golfers have featured several times this week, possibly going through a purple patch, but great weather, a fine course and superb greens will always encourage better scores. Credit must be given to Paul McGinley and his team for keeping Dunfanaghy course in such fine condition. The week’s events started on Tuesday and the runaway winner was Maggie Foy (8) who really cruised home with a super score of 43pts.It was exhibition golf from Maggie. Pauline Hunter took second place with 37 points and Margaret Witherow won the gross. Joan Cowan lifted 3rd prize. Wednesday was the normal Open and this was won by Derek Porter who just piped Peter Johnston for first place with 39 pts. Peter won second with 38 pts from Charles Roarty on 37 pts. Donal Boyle won the gross prize with 33 pts. Category prize on Wednesday went to Frank Kelly with 35 Pts and the nines were won by Eamonn Hunter and Willie Wilkin. Moving on to the President’s Mixed Stroke Competition the top slot was decided on BOT between two Husband and Wife teams. First place went to Michael and Sylvia Hart on 62 Nett from Nigel and Janice Doherty. Nigel and Janice had a 7 at the last hole and that did not help their card at all. The Juveniles also had a special competition on Thursday and this was won by Conor Chivers. The Junior Cadet section was won by Michael Dolan. There is a very healthy junior section in Dunfanaghy Golf Club largely but to the teaching of Seamus McMonagle (Club Professional) and the encouragement of President Brian Dolan, Vice President James Sweeney and John Hanna to name a few. On to Friday and the President’s Scramble saw more familiar names and first place went to Maggie Foy, Janice Doherty, Phillip Bond and Andy Ward scoring 53.2 to just edge their way in front of Bill McCallion, Andy Murray, John McColgan and James Sweeney with a score of 54 Nett. On to President’s Day itself and this was a really fine day with super sunshine but the wind got up a bit later on. The day takes the form of 18 holes with a nine hole playoff for the best ten scores and BOTs plus the best 2 gross scores. Obviously the gross men were Daniel Gallagher (2) and Bill McCallion (8) and the cut was made at 38 pts so it ended up with 12 players competing for the top prize. The play off was between James Sweeney, Nigel Doherty, Andy Murray, Michael McGinley, Joe Toner, Peter Johnston, MarkCaithness, Captain Gerald Dalton and Joe Toner. There were also prizes for the longest drive and nearest the pin for the Gents. The best score for the first 18 holes was Mark Caithness with 41 pts and Derek Porter next with 40 pts. The rest of the field had 39 pts so everything was to play for as there was only 2 pts of a gap. Things were really close and this could be anybodies competition to win. It’s funny how some golfers react in a playoff and you would expect the lower Handicap Golfers to do best. This was the case with Daniel Gallagher as he took the Gross prize with 50 pts, very steady play. But it seemed to be the second match of James Sweeney, Nigel Doherty, Andy Murray and Michael McGinley where a lot of the steady play and action was. The lead to and fro’d between these golfers for the whole of the playoff holes but it was in the last match, where Derek Porter was just out playing his golf and steadily improving his score, that gave us the winner of 2014 President’s Prize. Derek Porter took the first prize easy enough, his second first prize win in a week, with 62 pts (40 + 22). Second place went to Nigel Doherty, on 60 pts (39 +21). James Sweeney managed nip in front of Andy Murray on BOT with 59 pts (39 + 20). Joe Toner likewise managed to pip Captain Gerald Dalton for fifth place on 58 pts BOT (39 + 19). Mark Caithness took the first 18 prize with 41 pts and Category prize went to Hugh Brogan. The Nines went to Peter Johnston and Billy Griffin. Committee Prize went to Cornelius McMullan and Past President Prize was won by Roger Green. Paul Smith won the nearest the pin on the 13th hole with 129 cms. (He missed the putt) while the longest drive went to Andy Murray on the 16th hole (he hit a 3 wood) The Visitors prizes were won by Brian’s Father Hugh and his brother Peter. On Sunday the Grand final of the RYDER CUP competition was played to see who won the tickets worth €2000 to the Ryder Cup 2014. There were 9 qualifying teams taking part in this competition from all over the county, from as far away as Bundoran, and this was played as a 4BBB competition with 2 scores to count at all holes. Each team had a referee and a card marker and the tension was tight as was the scoring. It was the team of Ballybofey and Stranolar consisting of Freddie Stewart, Freddie Wilson, John McCaughan and Tony Griffin who came through the final with a score of 89 pts to lift the fantastic prize. Congratulations to you all. The Sunday Gents Stableford competition was won by John Chambers with 41 pts who just managed to edge out Colin Higgs on 40 pts for first place. Just a day too late boys, still there is always next year.
