{Postcard from Bourke} Were traveling around the outback and staying in Bourke, on the Darling River, looking at gardens and wildflowers and came across Bernie and Mazza. Mazza is the gardener (94 yrs old) with 150 roses all growing in Bourkes dusty desert red soils. They are magnificent! This is hard country. Bernie helps her with the weeding and pruning (which he does with a chainsaw, to the chagrin of the local garden club girls!). They are mulched with lucerne hay. As soon as he saw Melaleuca (6) he asked what was her favourite colour, inviting her in to pick a rose of her choice. When did we stop growing roses? And when did we stop giving them away to passersby? You cant beat Double Delight, Peace, Black Boy and Fressia - reliable hybrid tea roses with immense vigour for this extraordinary country.
