Posted by Janet Bigelow. Pay attention NORMAN. I am writing this to all of our friends. You know I never interfere with Norms decisions to do dangerous escapes. I have always trusted his judgment. I have seen him risk his life many times which can be stressful however I am professional assistant. For the first time in our relationship I am raising objections. I am not objecting to Norman doing Iceberg even though he has been retired since 1997. I will even assist him if he wants to do it. My objection is to him working in freezing water. Recently Norm was out in the cold brook up to his waist testing himself in freezing water. He would have been up to his neck except it is not quite deep enough yet. This is not a case of Norman loosing his mental faculties as one Houdini expert posted on line recently, it is a case of Norman being Norman. On stage and in his work he is brilliant and very self disciplined but off stage he needs a keeper. I don’t even like to leave in the morning because I worry what he may get into like fall asleep with the stove on and a long list of others things. Even in his thirties he needed a keeper. Norm could check into a hotel, go out to eat and forget what hotel he was in, he has always been that absent minded. On August 12th this year he will be seventy and needs to adjust to this age. If he continues to practice in freezing water he will not live long enough to do this escape. Norman has not trained in freezing water since he was in his thirties. The last thing I want to do is get in the way of his work but I feel the need to save him from himself. Those of you who know him know how stubborn and difficult he can be. Well if I have to, I can be just as stubborn. I have never spoken out and I would not if he would meet me half way. I do not feel well enough to argue with him which is useless any way. If Norman persist I am going to make every attempt to stop him even if it means legally. This is not just a case of me being what he calls, “The wicked witch of OZ”, it is only out of deep concern for him. He doesn’t need to rush to the “Great Beyond” all he has to do is wait a while because we will both be there soon enough. Janet Bigelow
