Postscript to my post below on zombie Democrats: Democrats are not literally zombies...although...no, not literally zombies. ;-) I emphatically do not want Jihadists to chop off *anyones* head. That being said, it is increasingly clear that there are at least two--possibly more--Americas, and not just two Americas--two parallel/alternate universes. The reactions people have to Obama--from the left: a reasonable moderate trying his best against extremist racist Republicans, from the right: a socialist trying to fundamentally transform the country against pathetic compromising Republicans--make this abundantly clear. It is increasingly difficult for people in these two universes to cordially disagree, and that saddens me. It is not usually my style to lower the level of discourse, but at least one of these perspectives (possibly both, but definitely at least one) on our political situation is warped. Occasionally, I am overwhelmed by despair at seeing my intellectual allies pursue foolishness (i.e. the belief among some--most?--on the right that a big part of the problem is scary outsiders and can thus be solved by border controls) and my adversaries seeming completely impervious to argument.
