Practice Tip of the Day (for intermediate players): Tired of that - TopicsExpress

Practice Tip of the Day (for intermediate players): Tired of that thin-sounding Drop D power chord on your acoustic guitar? Try adding another octave to it to give it more power and character. Lets examine an F chord. The standard Drop D has you holding down strings 6, 5 and 4 in the third fret. The traditional D-form barre has you holding down strings 4, 3 and 2 in frets 3, 5 and 6, respectively. Its easy to play both at the same time and generate a fuller sound. Simply place your regular Drop D chord in the third fret and add your third finger on the third string in the fifth fret and your fourth finger on the second string in the sixth fret. Now youre playing both. Its still a power chord thats neither major nor minor, so it can substitute for either. Even with all these notes held down, theyre still all just F and C notes. You dont have a full major chord because theres no A note in there and you dont have a full minor because theres no Ab note. For a little added color, try extending your barre across all six strings; that G note on the first string converts your chord from F to an F(add 9).
