President Obama was all set to refocus like a laser beam on the economy this week, when the shootings at the Navy Yard once again took his focus elsewhere. That didn’t stop him from continuing on with one of the most politically partisan press conferences ever to air from the White House. Obama accused Republicans who won’t support an increase in the debt limit of sowing “economic chaos” and assaulting America’s “constitutional structure.” As you might imagine, Republicans took that call to obey the details of the Constitution as pretty rich, considering the source. It would be interesting to hear what the framers of the Constitution would say about the government going for years without even passing a budget while running up a $16 trillion debt. One piece of rhetorical advice: when Obama warned Congress that he was drawing a line in the sand over the debt ceiling issue…in light of recent events, he might want to avoid making threats involving any “red lines” in the sand. Republicans might just suggest that he go borrow a few hundred billion dollars from Vladimir Putin.
