Press Release June 04, 2014 SLP Supports Cruise Ship Employment Program The Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) unreservedly supports the Cruise Ship Employment Program recently initiated by the Government of St. Lucia – and strongly urges the opposition to think twice before opposing it. The SLP recognizes that the rate of employment among the nation’s youth must be addressed in practical ways and therefore applauds this most recent move by the Government to enable young people to find paying jobs, both at home and abroad. NICE, STEP and SMILES are among several positive employment programs that the SLP government initiated and has kept going, despite Opposition criticism, to help curb unemployment. The SLP is particularly impressed with the fact that the training agencies and entities through which successful trainees are given international certification, are highly credible and accredited. The program is being extended and the Prime Minister says it will now seek to employ some 550 young persons, after over 200 were employed last year. Once applicants are screened and found eligible, the costs will be met by the St. Lucia Development Bank with funds allocated by the government. The Saint Lucia Labour Party encourages young unemployed persons to grab this opportunity to earn a good income and to maintain the already good and increasingly positive reputation of St. Lucia in the international cruise ship employment programs. Additionally, the SLP cautions the Opposition UWP to desist from portraying the current cruise ship employment program in a negative light. The UWP must remember that while it last held office, the unemployment situation was at 22% -- not a far cry from what it is now -- and even with more financial resources available to it, little (if anything) was done to curb it. The Labour Party also urges the UWP to recall that when its current leader was Tourism Minister not too long ago, a similar program was tried through Monroe College, with public funds, which failed to yield the positive results now coming from the current administration’s more effective approach. End. ` BREAD * JUSTICE * FREEDOM
