Press release 8/8/14 Anti Austerity Alliance - Dublin West PENSIONERS STILL FACE EVICTION OR JAIL AS HOUSE OFFER FALLS THROUGH Martin and Violet Coyne, a Castleknock couple whose rental home is being repossessed, still face a choice of homelessness or jail. A property offered to them from a non-resident, following publicity around their case, fell through. The Coynes are due to return to court on August 27th and, unless they find another property on rent allowance, they will face either eviction by the sheriff or jail for refusing to vacate the property, which is being repossessed by a receiver for ACC Bank. The Coynes asked Anti Austerity Alliance public representatives who are assisting them to publicly clarify this for them, as there was a perception that their plight was now resolved. The Coynes are one of many families whose homes are being repossessed by banks or receivers. All such repossessions should be outlawed -- unless there is alternative accommodation for those who live in these homes, said Ruth Coppinger TD. Banks are upping the ante now as property prices rise in a mad rush for sales to improve their books. But people are living in these properties for years and have nowhere else to go. The Coynes are innocent victims. Once again, we have to ask where is the promised social housing? This is meant to be the number one priority of Labour leader, Joan Burton, but the Coynes are living in her constituency and they cannot find anywhere to live. Rent controls, no evictions and a building programme of social and affordable housing is the only way to resolve this crisis, said Deputy Coppinger. Ends
