Prices that really piss me off. I like to eat out at good - TopicsExpress

Prices that really piss me off. I like to eat out at good restaurants but I really get annoyed when wines are marked up to ridiculous levels. Of course, they often only offer obscure brands and you have no idea of their real worth. Businesses need to make a profit. Dan Murphy is doing very well. How’s this for some examples from current web sites: Amanda’s on the Edge at Pokolbin sells Tyrrell’s Vat 1 Semillon (2007) for $120 a bottle. You can buy it at Dan Murphy’s for $61.75. Scratchleys sell Yalumba Vintage Merlot (2011) for $24 a bottle. You can buy it for $10.45 at Dan Murphy’s. Paymasters Café sells Roberts Stein Chardonnay (2014) for $53.90. You can buy the 2012 vintage for $27.37 at Dan Murphy’s. These are all Australian wines, no imports. But things get worse in major tourist areas or the cities. We recently checked out The Boathouse at Noosa for a relative’s 60th birthday. A bottle of Deakin Chardonnay (vintage unspecified) sells for $35 a bottle. It costs $6.90 at Dan Murphy’s. At 360 Restaurant, Sydney’s revolving restaurant, they have overheads. I know that but explain these (and they are all Australian wines). Stonier Chardonnay (2012) sells for $72 a bottle. Dan Murphy sells the 2013 vintage for $21.85 and the 2011 vintage for $37.99. Brokenwood Semillon (2013) sells for $59 a bottle. You can buy it for $18.95 at Dan Murphy’s. Cape Mentelle Chardonnay (2011) sells for $99 a bottle. You can buy the 2013 vintage for $34 at Dan Murphy’s. Why isn’t there a law to stop this sort of extortion? And don’t think you will save money by buying wine by the glass. The cost of a glass of wine is frequently more than the cost of the entire bottle it was poured from. Pubs are also culprits at this type of overcharging.
