Progressives like Mark Leno (D) try to have it both ways. They lambast the establishment for maintaining a sub-living minimum wage while at the same time promoting a higher but still sub-living minimum. He intends to get buy-in from his ruling class friends and the State assembly majority because it will have a set and forget clause linking the minimum wage to the cost of living index thus locking in a sub-living minimum . Automatic COLAs are progressive and desirable for workers but the deal being proposed is aimed at forestalling for an indeterminate amount of time the raising of the minimum to a living prevailing union wage. This is how the ruling class politicians work they act as friends of labor and get your organizations to concentrate on keeping them in office while they serve up crumbs with the understanding that you do not shake up the status quo by launching more effective campaigns such as rolling strike waves and launching an independent fighting workers/labor party. Lessons of the election if you want a minimum wage which is a living wage you will not get it at the ballot box you will have to organize unions and launch strikes, occupations and put fear in the shareholders that if they do not concede you may just take it all away from them. By denying a living wage the capitalists put revolution on the agenda as everyone has (or should have) the right to make a living wage at a decent and safe job.
