Prolong Looking at a computer is harmful for your eyes It is an old saying that watching too much TV will damage your eyes. Nowadays we spend most of our time looking at different types of screens. For example we use computer or laptops to do our work, phones to do calls and text, TV screens to relax our-self. (1) Problems that could results from looking at screens: It is suggested that those persons who sit in front of computer screen for at least three hours a day may suffer following abnormalities. (2) *.Eye discomfort *.Headaches *.Itchy eyes *.Difficulty focussing (1, 2, 3) *.Burning sensations *.Changes in color perception *.Blurred vision *.Dry or watering eyes Eyestrain: Repetitive strain injury (RSI) that results due to insufficient rest, improper working conditions and etc is termed as eye strain. (2, 4) Causes of eye strain: There are different causes of eye strain including Glare: Glare can cause fatigue to eye muscles and affected person suffer to make out images. Glare is of tow types as direct and indirect. (2) In case of direct glare light directly target your eyes wheres in indirect glare light shine your eyes after reflecting from different surfaces. (3) It could happen when your computer screen is too dark or too bright. (2, 5) Postiotion of computer screen: Eyes perform optimum function to see an object which is straight ahead and slightly down. It is difficult for eyes to see an object which is present at different directions due to continuous working of eye muscles. So incorrect positioning of laptop or monitor can damage your eyes. So it is advisable to place computer screen at the level of your eyes. (3) Dry eye syndrome: It is a condition in which inflammation of eye results due to lack of tears but it does not affect your vision. (6) This lack of tears occurs due to blockage of certain glands of the eye named as “oil secreting glands”.According to the NHS, proper use of computers and laptops could prevent dry eye syndrome. Preventive measures: Following are few important preventive measures . *.Set up your computer screens and laptops at correct position *.The screen should be placed at a distance of 18-30 inches from you *.Screen should be bend at a degree of 10-15 in order to prevent glare (3, 7) *.It is advisable to use glare screen to prevent glare (2, 5) *.Blinking of eyes is necessary as it washes eyes with natural fluid *.It is better to adopt 20-20-20 concept which means “every 20 minutes you should try to look at something 20 feet away for a minimum of 20 seconds”.......so let us to prevent our eyes
