Province won’t fund Pictou County Governance Study The province has pulled the plug on a long-awaited municipal governance study for Pictou County, Municipal Relations Minister Mark Furey announced Tuesday night. “It’s very clear there is not a consensus among the councils or even within some councils on how to move the six municipal units forward together on municipal governance change,” Mr. Furey said in a release. The study has been in the works for years into the feasibility of amalgamating the municipalities or sharing more services. It was originally proposed by the Pictou Chamber of Commerce and the province agreed in 2010 to pay up to $150,000 towards a study, provided all six units agreed, the release states. The six councils had all agreed to each kick in $25,000 toward the $300,000 report. “We’re disappointed there will be no study,” said Pictou Mayor Joe Hawes in a telephone interview late Tuesday night. However, he agreed with Furey that there isn’t a unified will for change right now amongst the municipal councils. “As long as there are some who are richer than others, I don’t think there will be the will,” he said.
