Public information statement... Effective Saturday... April 19th 2014 (april 20st 00z)... the Birmingham Alabama National Weather Service office will resume seasonal taf (terminal Aerodrome forecast) service for the Talladega Municipal Airport (kasn) in Talladega Alabama in support of the biannual National association of stock car auto racing (nascar) races at the Talladega superspeedway. Routine and updated taf forecasts will be issued at least 4 times daily for this Airport... 24 hours a day... for 2 weeks leading up to and 3 days after the races. The two major race events are held in may and October. These general dates are subject to change by nascar. For this years Spring event... taf service will resume on the evening of April 19th 7 PM CDT (april 20st 00z) and conclude on the evening of may 7th 7 PM CDT (may 8th 00z)... barring race delays. These events bring over 200,000 people to the superspeedway for each race for several days in advance. Many of the attendees fly by private or charter planes into the Talladega Municipal Airport. Due to communications limitations... kasn tafs will be issued using amd not sked at the end of the taf forecast as amendments will not be guaranteed. The seasonal taf forecasts will be available using the AWIPS identifier... bhmtafasn.
