Purdue GA position - Graduate Assistant Position: Libraries Research Department The Libraries Research Department is currently interviewing to fill a half time (20 hours/week) graduate assistantship for the Academic Year 2013-2014 (Fall and Spring). The assistantship is available beginning August 5, 2012 (start date is negotiable). Background: This position is centered on supporting the work of the Purdue University Libraries’ Research Department. The Libraries’ Research Department seeks to apply the theories and practices of library science towards addressing data management and curation issues. These issues include the organization, description, dissemination, publication and preservation of research data. To this end, in addition to its own research endeavors, the Libraries’ pursue interdisciplinary collaborations with faculty at Purdue and elsewhere. We seek to better understand the data related needs of faculty and students, respond to these needs through developing innovative solutions, and then implementing these solutions in ways that align with existing practice and cultural norms. Duties: The primary duty of the graduate student assistant will be to support the expansion of the “data information literacy” (DIL) project into the Social Sciences and the College of Agriculture. The Social Sciences expansion will be done in partnership with Michigan State University. Based on research conducted at Purdue, Cornell, Minnesota and Oregon, we seek to incorporate and build upon relevant aspects of information literacy to identify and teach skill sets in data management, publishing and curating to graduate students. Information about the first iteration of the DIL project for science and engineering can be found on the project website: datainfolit.org. Secondary duties will include assisting in the further development of the Data Curation Profiles Toolkit developed by the Purdue University Libraries (datacurationprofiles.org). Responsibilities will include (but are not limited to): • Develop and maintain the project’s web presence using the confluence platform. This includes facilitating the exchange of information and documentation between Purdue and MSU, and enabling the dissemination of project outputs, such as papers, presentations and reports to targeted audiences. • Maintain and grow the social media presence of the DIL project and potentially the Data Curation Profiles Toolkit as well. • Help to conduct literature reviews and environmental scans for relevant information pertaining to Data Information Literacy and the Data Curation Profiles Toolkit. Monitor the literature for new developments in data management, sharing and curation. • Developing applications to submit to the Internal Review Board (IRB) to conduct research on human subjects. • Transcribing audio recorded interviews, and data entry into coding software (NVivo). • Generating detailed documentation, including taking meeting minutes. • Creating instructional materials and other resources to support the development and implementation of the DIL program(s). • Assisting in the set up and coordination of events. The assistantship will also help support a variety of activities related to the research initiatives of the Purdue University Libraries as needed. Qualifications: PhD or MS student, preferably in Communications, Political Science Sociology, Education or a related social science. Specific requirements for the position are as follows: • An ability to write clear and concise documentation. • Familiarity and comfort with using research related applications and services such as Mendeley, Zoterro and library databases. • Knowledge and work related experience with social media sites (including facebook and twitter), and other tools for sharing and disseminating information effectively online. • Demonstrated skills in transcription, record keeping, and documentation. A keen attention to detail and an ability to express concepts and ideas clearly and concisely in writing. • Familiarity with entering or updating content into web based content management systems such as Confluence. • Familiarity with qualitative research and tools to support qualitative research projects such as NVivo. • An ability to be able to work independently and to complete tasks on-time. Preferred skills and abilities for the position are as follows: • Experience in developing IRB applications. • Familiarity with video editing software and techniques. • Knowledge and work related experience with Drupal. • Background and experience in instructional design. • Knowledge of modern web design techniques and technologies. • A demonstrated interest in data management, data curation and cyberinfrastructure issues especially as they may pertain to the Social Sciences or Agriculture.
