Q. I dont live in the US. Does my script need to be set there? A. No, it doesnt. In fact, setting your script in your home country or at least in a location you know well is a much better strategy than relocating the story, action and characters to the United States. First, you are going to be able to bring much more detail and truth about the location than if you set your story in a place youve only visited or read about. Second, readers see plenty of scripts set in the US and enjoy reading stories set in other countries and on other continents. A detective story in Los Angeles may seem a little familiar while a mystery set in Nairobi or Budapest or Kyoto would offer a fresh, unexpected setting. Third, since the Academy Nicholl program is not a production company, were not affected by any production logistical or budgetary concerns. Our goal is to identify talented, new screenwriters, and locations and settings only matter as they enhance an intriguing story.
