Question of the Day The federal government of Nigeria is leaving no stone unturned in the fight against the deadly Ebola virus disease. As part of the effort to ensure the virus is adequately contained and prevented from spreading easily, President Goodluck Jonathan through the federal ministry of education extended the resumption date for all primary and secondary schools till October 13, and directed immediate closure of all holiday coaching nationwide. The government had some weeks back trained a total of 800 volunteers to aid in the treatment of those suffering from the dreaded virus. But as laudable as these gestures are, the federal government has failed to replicate same in the political wing of the country. For some days now, a group under the auspices of Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria, TAN has been holding rallies across the country with hundreds ofpeople in attendance. If the intention of the federal government for closing primary and secondary schools is to prevent contracting and spreading the virus through crowded environment, it’s reluctance to stop such political gathering calls for concern. So we ask the question today: Is it right to close schools as a way of checking the spread of the Ebola virus disease, while allowing large political gatherings to go on?
