Questions / Suggestions for reading and preparation for LUMC - Word Feast 2014 This sermon series will be a study of 1 John, one chapter each week. In order to maximize your learning and experience, here are a few suggestions to prepare for worship, and a few questions to consider as you read 1 John chapter 1 this week. 1. Do a little research on the Apostle John, the author of this book. How old was he, when was it written, to whom was it written, what subjects or issues or concerns was John seeking to address with this book? 2. Read the chapter. Then quietly pray and ask God to speak to you from one verse from the chapter. Read it again. Write out the verse that seems to jump out to you. What was it about that verse that you think made it speak to you? What do you think God might be wanting to say to you from that verse? 3. Notice words or ideas that appear numerous times in this Chapter. (we proclaim to you). Make a simple outline of the chapter divide it into sections you see. Summarize each section or paragraph, give them names. 4. Make a list of everything this chapter says or teaches about Jesus. About God. 5. What major theological ideas or concepts do you see in this chapter? (fellowship). 6. What does it mean to you personally that God is Light? What are the implications if this is true? What changes in your life might need to be made to more accurately portray your belief that God is light?
