Quick side bar to earlier post: my parents & I lived in the Bahamas for some while, which was a duty-free port, so all sorts of luxury items were available at reasonable cost. French perfumes, Italian leather, Empire products (the Bahamas were still a British Crown Colony at the time), fabrics, jewelry, designer clothing - all available at considerably lower prices than stateside. My first bottle of real, honest-to-goodness perfume was Joy - my father bought it for me as a Christmas gift when I was about 14. It was exorbitantly expensive in the States and not exactly cheap in the Islands, so I used it sparingly. My girlfriends and I were invited to a dressy party (chaperoned, of course) one evening & I decided to splurge by wearing my treasured perfume. As I was dancing with a young man, he sniffed the air - appreciatively, I thought - then asked loudly: Whats that smell? It smell like Raid?
