Quitters??? Posted on May 27, 2009 I came across this blog which I wrote some years back, I left it at my thoughts then and post it accordingly. About less than a year after I landed in Bangkok in Sept 2001, I heard about the stayers / quitters theory quipped by the then pm goh chok tong, now this issue surfaced again (the republic was going thru a brain drain in the midst of an economic crisis then, the quitters are those who move overseas and work, the stayers are those who stayed behind) . With due respect to mm lky, sm gct, I really do beg to differ: Most of us who went overseas or are given the opportunity to go overseas, we didnt quit being a Singaporean, we answered the call of regional / international / globalisation. In the 90′s mm lky, challenged us saying we are too contented, work & live in Singapore, when we be should be flexing our wings, venturing overseas. A group of people (myself included) answered that challenge, though I only ventured forth 5 odd years ago, it’s never too late I felt as I decided to arm myself with at least 10 years working experience as I lack the basic degree qualification. These are the people who were being labelled Quitters’. We are not QUITTERS’, Period. Being overseas is a learning experience, we have to expand our mindset, adjust our perceptions accordingly, what we do in Singapore and over here is totally different and we learn to adjust. Truly its very different from changing jobs back home. The experience in itself is mind blowing. Sometime you wonder if you can / want go through it again. Actually, I find myself addicted to changes, the challenges provided a different insights and it’s exhilarating. As my fellow Singaporean’s have stated and I support their statement, we are the unofficial ambassadors of Singapore, we travel, educate, invite people to Singapore and we still network / talk and do business to and with Singapore. When called back to do our national service, we answer that call, proudly. In trying times when the odds are against us, we don’t quit and run back to Singapore with our tails between our legs and admit defeat, we endure / persevere and move on. This was in build into us by our leaders from very young, while some may look the other way, we are the ones who proudly proclaim we are Singaporeans and no one can ever take that away from us. Some people mentioned that I spoke as though I hated Singapore at some point, well, we are all not perfect, I don’t hate my country, what I am, where I landed is the result of what my country has given me, like the Computer, I have nothing against the hardware, it’s just I don’t agree with how the software works. I believe we could do better that’s all.
